Holy Cow!
Bob and I were walking the dogs, and
came across this bull (note no fence) wandering down our road. The bull
spent most of today grazing and resting outside our gate. No wonder
Telkom didn't arrive to fix the ADSL.

Pothole hunting - 2
Jasper
found a pothole that had been fixed. The idea of numbering them is
quite novel. What happens when they erode and the numbers disappear?

Pothole hunting - 1
Went pothole hunting with the dogs. Didn't
have to go very far. This one is on one of the main roads. The
intersections are worse, and traffic is totally unpredictable. Makes
Cape Town taxi drivers look positively pedestrian.

All Mlungu look the same
Drove my car for the first time today, after arriving in Mthatha over a week ago.
I decided to practise my elementary Xhosa on the petrol jockey, and all was going swimmingly until he mentioned Hellen Zille. I asked him to repeat his question in English.
"Are you Helen Zille?"
He looked skeptical when I said no, because Helen had been in Mthatha just before the elections and she can speak a smattering of Xhosa.
My voice is quite croaky (like Helen's), my hair is the same length and colour (sort of) as hers, and we both wear specs. But I'm sure that is where the similarities end. Oh, and we both drive cars with a CA registration (very rare in Mthatha).
I think he still didn't believe me, because when I left, he asked again, "Are you sure you're not Helen?"
Just call me Ma'am.

Neighbours
This is my neighbour's yard. I hesitate to call it a garden. He works from home, and is currently burning a pile of plastic rubbish, the smell of which which is permeating our house. Lovely.

Welcome to Mthatha!
So, as I'm signing off the job card for the electric fence, the dude says to me:
"So what do you guys do? I heard a construction company was moving in here. I mean, I know what YOU do. You sit around here all day."
Not often that I'm rendered speechless.

Study unpacked - Bob's space
If you're wondering why his workspace is so small, remember that his desk was trashed by the movers :( |
